Nursery suffers damage after thieves steal lead from roof

West Lothian Police is appealing for information from the public following the theft of lead from a nursery roof in Livingston earlier this week.

The incident took place at around 5:40am on Tuesday morning, where three men were seen pushing shopping trolleys full of the lead down Ladywell East Road, Livingston. Although police recovered the trolleys, the thieves have not been apprehended, dailyrecord.co.uk reported.

It is estimated that to repair the roofing membrane and fix the damage will cost at least £20,000.

Detective Inspector David Pinkey said: “As a consequence of the theft of lead and vandalism to the roof of the building, heavy rainfall caused significant damage to the interior of the Livingston Family Centre.”

Inspector Pinkley added that the effect on the community would be ‘severe’ as the nursery would not be able to meet the needs of local families during the summer holidays.

Danny Logue, the West Lothian Council’s Executive Councillor for Social Policy, said that it was ‘absolutely appalling’ that people would steal from such a facility.

“Our staff are working hard to ensure that alternative provisions are put in place as quickly as possible, but that may take some time,” he said.

According to theedinburghreporter.co.uk, anyone with information should contact Police Scotland on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
